They are simple to prepare, fast, delicious, and a great way to pack a lot of nutrition into one meal. You can use them as a meal replacement, add toppings, prepare them in advance, and take them wherever you go. If you are having a hard time finding foods that you like, or time to eat them, smoothies are the way to go.
I have been trying to eliminate sugar from my diet, so my smoothies have been on the tart side with very little to sweeten them aside from fruit. I really like the change and I have been feeling better after drinking larger smoothies with less sweetness. However, some smoothies really need that sweet component, so you have to be careful not to get to “raw” with your ingredient choices. For example, if you are drinking a smoothie with greens in it, always add something to sweeten it or you will feel like you are drinking grass. No one wants to drink 18 ounces of grass.
Yesterday I wanted berries and chocolate for my snack but I didn’t need anything too sweet, and wanted to keep it healthy. This smoothie was the recipe that hit the spot. This is cocoa berry smoothie has antioxidants, fiber, healthy fats, and just enough chocolate to balance it out. It was refreshing and gave me hours of energy.
1.5 c cashew milk
1.5 c cherry berry blend frozen fruit
2 tbs cocoa powder
handful of ice
2-3 dates, optional (for added sweetness)
1 tbs chia seeds
1 tbs coconut flakes, unsweetened
Blend the cashew milk, berries, cocoa powder, and ice in a blender until smooth and creamy. You can add dates if you want this smoothie to be sweet, but it was delicious without a sweetener.
Top with chia seeds and coconut and enjoy with a handful of almonds.
My husband and son would not have liked this smoothie without a sweet component. For the girl who loves dark chocolate, this one is for you. Smoothies have been helping with my seasonal depression as well. Yes I am a fan of sunshine and flip flops, but who isn’t? I love eating fresh fruit in the summer and we eat it all day long. During the winter months, and especially the week of a blizzard, fruit is scarce so we have to get creative. I eat a lot of dried fruit, citrus fruit, and of course smoothies to keep my belly happy and my mind on summer.
